  • Connection to theme:

I am awed by the young Jewish immigrants who, instead of being victims of the circumstances in which they lived, chose to be leaders and visionaries who changed our world with hope, strength, courage and determination to create a world that held the promise and freedom they believed in.

  • Jewish Ideas:

There was something intrinsically Jewish about the way these women responded to their world-- with a demand for justice, a constant questioning of the status quo, and a hope and strength to lead through threatening & difficult circumstances, to bring people together to create a better world.

  • Synopsis:

Farbrente! is the a very short reflection of an older Clara Lemlich of the moment she incited 40,000 garment workers to stage a massive strike--- mostly young Jewish women immigrants like herself, dubbed Farbrente Yidish Maydelakh (Fiery Jewish Girls) in the press of the day.  She's joined by Pauline Newman, Rose Schneiderman, and some of her other co-workers in reflecting on that moment, the cascade of events it brought, and it's implications with what is happening to workers in 2025.
